Financing California

Ideas from the 14th Annual Travers Conference

Few people would say we should stop educating our children, stop providing medical care to the poor, or stop sending criminals to prison. Yet California’s multibillion-dollar budget deficit presents us with the prospect of doing just that.

With this special issue of PolicyMatters, we are taking the innovative policy proposals of leading experts from the University of California’s annual Travers Conference to the halls of the California State Capitol. And at PolicyMatters’ October 2011 conference, Governing California: A Discussion at the Capitol, we will build upon the findings of the Travers Conference, engaging policymakers, professors, students, and advocates in a collaborative discussion about the critical and pressing issues facing California.

-Dean Henry Brady and Prof. Chris Ansell
